New year, new start for Welsh pub

A remote community pub in North Wales has re-launched under new management, with a little help from The Co-operative Loan Fund.

Tyn-Y-Capel is an historic pub in Minera, North Wales, which dates back to 1250. It reopened in 2013 thanks to the efforts of over 100 villagers who bought shares in the venture which was supported by The Co-operative Community Shares Fund. The share offer raised nearly £40,000 towards the building’s lease.

Since the reopening – an event which was attended by over 1,000 people – the co-op has been developing the space’s potential as a function venue.  A recent loan from The Co-operative Loan Fund was used to hire a new general manager, Craighton, who has re-launched the pub with a revised interior and better menu.

The co-op hopes that the re-launch will secure Tyn-Y-Capel’s future as a well-loved village facility, as well as catering for visitors who have come to enjoy Minera’s beautiful surroundings.

Board member Barbara Savin, said:

Hiring Craighton was a big turning point for us. After a turbulent summer, people in the community have rallied and feel a renewed sense of enthusiasm for the pub. Our trade is now stronger than ever and we’re really excited about the future.

The new layout boasts a larger lounge area which benefits from stunning views of the mountains, and a cosy upstairs restaurant serving a range of high quality local food. The function room – dubbed The Dragon’s Den – has been redecorated and set up to show sports.

The venue offers a unique and valuable space for them to congregate, as well being a destination pub which draws visitors from outside of the village.”
