Supporting the next generation of co-ops
Co-op Loan Fund are committed to supporting young people as we look towards the next generation of co-ops.
In recent years there has been a noticeable surge in younger people getting involved in the co-operative movement, particularly around the sectors of worker co-ops, community-owned co-ops, eco co-ops, housing co-ops and tech co-ops. Whether it be in search of fair work, democratic governance, action on climate change, a more affordable housing market or equal tech solutions; younger people are striving for meaningful change and a better world to live in and contribute to.
Co-op Loan Fund was set up to strengthen the size and scope of the co-operative sector through the provision of ethical, accessible loan finance. It is funded and run by co-operatives with the specific aim of helping other co-operatives – a practical example of the principle of co-operation among co-operatives.
Recently the fund has made three exciting loans focusing on promoting co-operative values and development with young people, particularly in relation to issues set against the current economic and political backdrop. Loans to The Ridge Foundations, Stir to Action and Student Co-op Homes are centred around common themes of fair work, sustainable employment, community, economic development, the environment, housing and how these issues directly impact on the young people they connect with.
The Ridge Foundations CIC is a construction company and social enterprise in Dunbar with a core focus of providing high quality training in traditional skills and supported employment for those who would otherwise struggle to access or sustain either, particularly in areas of geographical isolation in the East Lothian region.
Stir to Action is a national infrastructure body for economic development, focussing on using democratic ownership to transform inequality, the climate emergency and political culture.
Student Co-op Homes aims to bring together existing and start up student housing co-operatives across the UK and build a portfolio of properties for lease to local self-managing student housing co-ops.
All of these co-ops continue to do fantastic work putting young people at the core of what they do whilst promoting co-operative values and principles and we are proud to support them.
